Storefront for Domesticity

As part of the 5th International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam (IABR) the city of Rotterdam held an outdoor exhibition dealing with the cities' densification programme. On several sites that were classified as potential location for new housing, a designer was asked to formulate his vision. De Kort Van Schaik was asked to envision a small scale addition to an alley on the Lijnbaan, the busiest shopping street in Rotterdam.

'The centre of Rotterdam is still surprisingly full of niches that can accommodate housing. The projection of a single house in the Lijnbaan area sparks the imagination. But it also raises a question: Is the private character of domesticity compatible with an area predominantly filled with storefronts and a (window) shopping crowd?'
